The end of 2G/3G in New Zealand and what it means for GPS Trackers

22nd May 2025

What’s Happening?

The last remaining cell provider in New Zealand with a 2G network – One NZ (formerly Vodafone) has announced both the 2G and 3G networks will be fully disconnected on 31 December 2025. Both other network operators in NZ Spark and 2Degrees have already turned off their 2G networks and will be disconnecting 3G before the end of 2025.

Why This Matters for GPS Trackers

Many GPS tracking and other IOT devices, especially older or cheaper models — rely on 2G or 3G networks to send their location data. When the networks are shut down, any device that isn’t 4G compatible will stop working!

How to Check if You’re Affected

Here’s how to know if your GPS tracker will stop working:

  • Check your device specifications. If they mention 2G (GSM/GPRS) or 3G (UMTS/HSPA) in the specs it’s unlikely to also support 4G connections.
  • The tracker is 5+ years old but hasn’t needed a SIM upgrade then it is most likely using the 2G or 3G network.
  • If the specs say 4G, LTE, or NB-IoT then the device is already compatible with the 4G network.

If you’re unsure, contact your tracker supplier or SIM provider for confirmation.

What You Should Do

To avoid service disruptions in 2025, here are key steps you should take:

✅ Upgrade to 4G-Enabled Trackers

Look for devices that support LTE Cat-M1, NB-IoT, or standard 4G LTE. These are designed for long-term compatibility and have better connection coverage.

✅ Talk to Your Provider

If you’re using a GPS tracking service, contact them and ask: Are my devices 4G compatible? And if not, do they offer free or discounted upgrade options?

✅ Test Before the Deadline

Don’t wait until December 2025. To avoid disruptions replace your old devices now and check their performance to ensure everything works as expected.

🚀 The Good News

The retirement of 2G and 3G is a global shift, not just a local change. It’s an opportunity to upgrade your tracking technology for better accuracy, lower power consumption, and improved reliability.
